Apple Cake with Caramel Sauce

Adding Malt the the Caramel Sauce gave it another level of rich smooth taste

Ingredients

Cake Ingredients:

  • 3 cups of Flour
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 & 1/2 cups Granulated Sugar (Divided)
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1/4 cup Vegetable Oil
  • 1 cup Applesauce
  • 2 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
  • 3 Large Eggs
  • 4 Granny Smith Apples (Or other baking apples)
  • 1 Tbsp Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp Ginger

For Caramel Glaze:

  • 1 cup Butter
  • 1 & 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 cup Soda Fountain ® Malted Milk Powder
  • 2/3 cup Milk

Instructions

For Cake:
1.  Preheat oven 350 degrees.

2.  With cooking spray, coat a 9 x 13 pan and set aside.

3.  Peel and remove core from the baking apples.

4.  Chop apples into small bite size pieces and place in a medium bowl.

5.  Sprinkle 1/2 cup sugar, cinnamon and ginger over apples and toss to coat.

6.  In a large bowl sift together flour, 2 cups of sugar, baking soda and salt.

7.  Mix in eggs, oil, applesauce and vanilla.  The batter will be thick.

8.  Fold in chopped apples.

9.  Pour into pan and spread evenly.

10.  Bake for 40 – 50 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean.

11.  About 5 minutes before cake is done,prepare caramel glaze.

For Caramel Glaze:

  1.  In a sauce pan, combined brown sugar, milk, malt powder and butter.
  2. Bring to a boil and continue cooking for 2 & 1/2 minutes, stirring consistently to prevent scalding.
  3. Poke holes over the entire cake with a fork or skewer.
  4. Slowly pour half of the caramel glaze over the hot cake.
  5. Cool 30 minutes before serving.
  6. Slice and drizzle each serving with more Malt Caramel Glaze (hot or cold).
